On Sunday, May 24, Jill McCumby brought her dog JoJo to church to be a useful object lesson for a unique children’s time. We learned that although JoJo had suffered a traumatic young life, he is still joyful, loving and enthusiastic. JoJo is able to love people despite the way he was treated in the past. What an inspiring story for us all - tying in the gospel message of forgiving others, not living in the past and enjoying life.

“Blessed be the Lord God” Ties Together Stewardship Event
“Blessed be the Lord God” --what a great way to summarize our annual stewardship event May 17-31 this year! The theme comes from Luke 1:68 (RSV), in Zechariah's spirit-filled prophecy that recapped all that God had done for Israel.
“Blessed be the Lord God” also appears in several Old Testament passages. Some translations substitute other words for “blessed”, but the idea of praise for God because of His faithfulness remains. Genesis 9 has such a passage in verse 26, after God explains earlier in the chapter the rainbow sign of His covenant. The rainbow is a prominent illustration of God's provision for us from beginning to end, no matter what storms may appear in between.
Genesis 9:26, Genesis 24:27, 1 Samuel 25:32, 1 Kings 1:48, 1 Kings 8:15, 1 Chronicles 16:36, 2 Chronicles 2:12, 2 Chronicles 6:4, Ezra 7:27, Psalm 41:13, Psalm 72:18, Psalm 106:48, and Luke 1:68 all echo the “Blessed be the Lord God” theme and point to what God has provided for us.
This is a challenging time for us this year, with the recession and loss of jobs, raises, investment income, and other things. Yet now more than ever, it's time to take stock of all that God has given us –things that are even more important than money –and see what we think we can return to God over the next year.
Of all that God has given us, what part of our time (a part of our lives) and money (a value received in exchange for our time) will we plan to offer to God through Barry Christian Church in the next year?
We'll have the opportunity to personally answer that question May 24 and 31 as we return our estimate of giving cards for the coming year (mid-2009 to mid-2010). If you will not be able to be in worship those days, you can mail your estimate to the church. Late estimates can also be turned in at the Congregational Meeting Monday, June 8, at 7pm.

Americans generate 251.3 million tons of garbage each year. This includes nearly 27 billion juice boxes, according to the Container Recycling Institute.
United Nations environmental program report estimated that there are over 46,000 pieces of plastic debris floating on or near the surface of every square mile of ocean. According to Greenpeace, this has created a floating island of garbage that contains an estimated six kilos of plastic for every kilo of plankton in the Pacific Ocean. This floating island is estimated to be larger than the state of Texas.
Please be a good steward of God’s creation. Recycle.

We would appreciate the recipes be turned in TYPED, but we will accept handwritten recipes also. Men - this is not just for the ladies - we want YOUR recipes too.
Please get your recipes ready- we need everyone’s help to make a nice cook book that we can all be proud of.

I want to sincerely thank the Barry Christian Church members for all the boxes they sent to the Soldiers here. It truly means a great deal to them to hear from fellow Americans back home. A flood of boxes which you sent sends a grand message that they are supported and not forgotten.
I know that what you sent took a great deal of time, money and effort and I cannot thank you and those involved enough. It is one thing to have great intentions and it is another to put those intentions into action – you and your friends went above and beyond. Here in Iraq, the Dagger Brigade thanks you very much.

We recently carried out the "The Barry Caring Challenge"
What is the Barry Caring Challenge? It was a call to action for each of us to love and care for one another.
It consists of 12 activities or "challenges" for you to complete over about 8 months from September 28 to early May. Sponsored by the Growth and Hospitality Committee, the idea for the Challenge came from last year's survey in which our congregation was described as loving, giving, friendly, sincere, warm, welcoming, caring, concerned and helpful. Wow! We want to build on that strength with an activity that will further reinforce the ties between us, expand the ways we care for one another and allow each of us to grow in our faith. To that end, we hope you (yes, YOU) will participate. We've given you very few excuses not to - the activities should be enjoyable and will not take much time.
To get started, simply pick up a Challenge Checklist and watch the bulletins, newsletters and church email list for more details. Checklists will be available at the bulletin board outside the sanctuary foyer. The checklist lists all the activities in the challenge, but not too many details. Every few weeks, an activity will be featured in the bulletin, newsletter and church email list. At this time, you will get all of the information you may need to complete that activity. Please note that you do not need to complete the activities exactly when they are featured. It may be easiest to do this, but you can do them any time.
In the end, we will celebrate everyone's participation - whether you complete one challenge activity or all twelve - with a dinner. We will plan to see you there because we know you're up for the challenge!

New Book for the Library!
Robert Stewart, our youth pastor wrote a book and gave copy to the church library.
The book is a true story about a boy with a dream of becoming a basketball player one day. He is faced with many doubts, obstacles, and temptations such as sex, drugs, etc. The boy decides to trust God and pray from time to time to see if God is really there for him. The book explores what happens when one is obedient and sometimes disobedient to God when following their dreams. Robert would recommend the book to anyone who has a goal, desire, or dream and plans on following their heart no matter the odds against them.
