Honor God, Seek Christ, Serve Others Together

Outreach

And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”  Matthew 25:40 (NRSV)

As you may have noticed while perusing this web site we at Barry Christian Church are committed to Honor God, Seek Christ and Serve Others Together.  So how do we do this?  Some ways are through our outreach program.  Outreach receives 10% of each month’s general offering.  This amount varies from month-to-month so no matter the amount there are twelve organizations Barry members deem worthy to receive a portion each month.  These are as follows:  Disciples of Christ Mission Fund that supports 72 ministries of wholeness around the world, Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries that connects those in need with multiple beneficial services bringing hope, health and opportunity, Northland Assistance Center offers assistance from legal services to emergency food and shelter, Salvation Army and its multitude of services for all types of need, Triality servicing those with developmental disabilities in our community, Fuller Center builds and renovates houses in partnership with families in need and Family Promise that helps the homeless and disadvantaged achieve sustainable independence.  After delegating funds to these twelve charities whatever balance may be remaining the committee jointly agrees on what other groups, services or organizations might need to receive assistance.  The following are some we have given to in the past: pantry packs providing nourishing food to youngsters in our area, the churches emergency fund giving a helping hand to friends and strangers when truly needed, military gift packages at Christmas, keeping our church van operational so it can bring the homebound to Sunday services, Clay County Clothes Closet where Northland families in need have access to free clothing, and others too numerous to list.

In addition throughout the year we have special drives for specific needs. These give our church members the opportunity to directly donate items they choose and purchase. Throughout February we celebrate Undie Sunday’s when we collect under cloths and pajamas for children from toddlers through high school.  During the month of March we build the Tower of Towels which is a collection of paper goods such as toilet paper, paper towels, diapers etc. that go to Hope House a temporary home for abused women in transition.  Throughout July and August we collect school supplies and fill backpacks for local school children that are unable to afford these items. From October to the end of the year a tree can be found in the outer lobby where during October and November one can take one or more leaves from the tree.  Each leaf specifies a food item to bring and put under the tree for needy families’ Thanksgiving dinners.  And in December the tree becomes a Warmth Tree where members can choose to bring warm mittens, hats, and gloves as well as blankets for the homeless in our community.

In October we walk as well as monetarily support Crop Walk that raises funds to fight hunger locally and globally. Throughout the school year we supply food to local school children through our Pantry Pack program.  Each Friday backpacks are filled with nourishing food so no child goes home for the weekend without food to eat, and at Thanksgiving we send them home with special dinners.  There’s the shoebox ministry prior to Christmas for which individual members fill shoeboxes with gifts and needed items that are then sent to children around the world.  At times we have special drives, one being held to garner gym shoes and sox to give children appropriate shoes for safety during gym class.  Our hope is that this program will be far reaching in our community here in the Northland.

For its size the Barry Christian Church congregation is exceptionally generous.  Year-after-year members continue to generously support these missions not only with monetary gifts but also with whatever is needed at the time.

Outreach committee meetings are at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday after the last Sunday of the month and held at the home of Don and Judy Thomas.  All are welcome to attend.
